// ESPN 2026 Consensus Conference & 7th Refresher Course

Welcome Message

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we invite all of you to the 2026 Consensus Conference and 7th Refresher Course of the European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN), which will be held in Rome-Italy, at NH Hotel Roma Centro, few steps from the heart of Rome City Center, from January 22nd to January 24th, 2026.

The topic selected for the Consensus Conference is head and craniovertebral junction injury. The programme has been structured with five main topics and questions to answer:

  1. Which is the role of ICP monitoring and other options of neuromonitoring to enhance outcome
  2. Which is the state of the art in pediatric cranioplasty
  3. How to diagnose and manage post-traumatic hydrocephalus
  4. When and how to assess Craniovertebral junction injuries
  5. Shaken baby syndrome from the neurosurgeon, the pediatrician and the ethical point of view
All five topics will be interactively ended by a drawing statement based on electronic voting from all the participants, ideally aiming at shared consents.

The Consensus Conference will be followed by the Refresher Course, which will be dedicated to craniosynostoses this year, focusing in a substantial part on monosutural forms, a topic in which a number of unsolved items still exist. The course will start from a due update on Genetics and Functional outcome of these diseases, soon after deepening on associated CSF and ICP disorders, models for training and different surgical options, including, beyond open and endoscopic techniques, also distraction and springs. The last session will resume actualities in multisutural synostoses and will concentrate on how the management of multisutural craniosynostoses changed in the last decade, ending with a glimpse on experimental models aiming at targeted prevention of this kind of disease, based on genetic modeling.

Large space will be dedicated to discussion fostering cases examples and debates.

We look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible in Rome.

Luca Massimi, Paolo Frassanito, Federico Bianchi and Gianpiero Tamburrini
