Mediterranean Diet and its role in weight management

Ioannis Arkadianos, MD, President, and co-founder of the “European Lifestyle Medicine Organization” (Greece)

The Mediterranean Diet is defined as a traditional dietary pattern found in the populations living in the Mediterranean basin (especially in Italy and Greece) during the 50s and 60s of the 20th century. Its contribution to health is important in many areas as it represents a more general dietary pattern in nutritional epidemiology that has been extensively studied, especially in the last two decades with a large and extensive literature. The Mediterranean diet in combination with the Mediterranean lifestyle is one of the most effective models for weight management.
