ABSTRACT

Processed food and cardiometabolic health

Prof. Dr. Hanno Pijl, Endocrinologist and Professor of Diabetology, Leiden University Medical Centre, (The Netherlands)

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is caused by gene-microbiota-lifestyle interactions. Nutrition is one of the 7 components of lifestyle that is critically involved. I will briefly summarize the metabolic risk markers of CVD, outline the role of ultra-processed food in their etiology, and illustrate the power of nutritional intervention as opposed to drugs in the reversal of metabolic risk by means of a patient case history.
