Workshop 2

Nanomaterials in the geoenvironment

Sunday, 2nd of July 2023

Workshop Conveners:
Andreas Gondikas, PhD, NKUA Greece
Javier Delgado, PhD, VITO Belgium

Workshop for early career researchers

The goal of this workshop is to introduce early career researchers (ECRs) to sampling, quality control, and state-of-the-art analytical techniques for studying nanomaterials in the geoenvironment. Technological developments in recent years have resulted in drastic improvements in our ability to study matter at the nanoscale, thus enabling research on solid materials that were previously only hypothesized to exist. In this workshop ECRs will obtain an overview on techniques for sample collection and analysis targeting nanomaterials (plastic and inorganic particles) in the geoenvironment, and examples from case studies. A Q&A session will allow participants to discuss issues related to their project and interact with experts in the field.

Program
09:30 - 10:00 Welcome and tour de table
10:00 - 10:30 Plastic particles in the geoenvironment (Lecture by Javier Delgado, VITO followed by 10 min Q&A)
10:30 - 11:00 Inorganic particles in the geoenvironment (Lecture by Andreas Gondikas, NKUA followed by 10 min Q&A)
11:00 - 12:00 Case studies (participants will be split in two groups and given an exercise to solve and discuss with the conveners)
12:00 - 12:30 Q&A (participants will have the opportunity to discuss challenges from their own field of study and receive feedback from the group)
12:30 - 13:00 Light lunch
13:00 - 13:30 Tour visit to the Core Analytical Facility of School of Science, NKUA (Marios Kostakis, PostDoc Dept. of Chemistry, NKUA)
