UHH_SS1 | “SMART” URBAN DRAINAGE: INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS, MEASURES AND TECHNOLOGIES TO MITIGATE FLOOD AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS IN URBAN AREAS

Theme:
Urban Hydrology and Hydraulics (UHH)

Short description on the session:
Expanding urbanization and climate changes are straining existing urban drainage systems over their capabilities. At the same time, design requirements for new sewer systems are increasingly demanding. On one hand, recent extreme rainfall events often result in extraordinary peak flows in sewer networks that exceed the standard design discharges and, consequently, Green Infrastructures (GIs) have been adopted overwhelmingly as a sustainable tool to manage urban stormwaters. On the other hand, the considerable progress in the field of the ICT is pushing towards the implementation of smart sensing devices and real time control technologies to measure both quantitative and qualitative parameters. At this regard, the special session will consider all contributions dealing with physical and/or numerical investigations on hydraulics of sewer structures, analysis of GIs with impact on the hydrological restoration and pollution control in urban areas, description of novel devices and techniques for real-time monitoring across urban drainage systems and assessment of innovative planning and design criteria for urban drainage systems.
