During the last 30 years geotechnical engineering in Greece has experienced an unprecedented growth, fueled by the construction of major infrastructure projects. Although the economic crisis of the latest decade has caused a dramatic reduction in related activity, Greek engineers have had a substantial involvement in international overseas projects. In addition, academic research has suffered only modestly, thanks mainly to European research funding. We believe that the quality of geotechnical engineering has mostly retained its high level. We are hopeful that this will be demonstrated in the forthcoming 8th Hellenic Conference of Geotechnical Engineering, to be held in Athens, 6-8 November 2019.
