About the ICAI

WHO WE ARE
The International Center for Academic Integrity works to identify, affirm, and promote the values of academic integrity among students, faculty, teachers, and administrators. ICAI was founded to combat cheating, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty in higher education. Our mission has since expanded to include the cultivation of cultures of integrity in academic communities throughout the world. ICAI offers assessment services, resources, and consultations to its member institutions, and facilitates conversations on academic integrity topics each year at its annual conference. In order to meet the continually evolving needs of our membership in future years, ICAI encourages, supports, and shares research that predicts, describes, and responds to trends and issues relating to academic integrity standards and practices. Membership benefits are extended to faculty, administrators, students, and staff at membership institutions around the globe, and to its individual members, partners, and supporting organizations.

In 1990 Dr. Donald McCabe conducted a survey in which he asked students about cheating behaviors in which they may have engaged. He found the results so alarming that in 1992, he convened a group of trusted colleagues to address the issues that his surveys had revealed. The group formed the Center for Academic Integrity, with McCabe as its first president and his colleagues, Jim Lyons, Bill Kibler, Sally Cole, Gary Pavela, and John Margolis as its Board of Directors. Dr. McCabe’s survey continues to be the primary research instrument of ICAI and has been administered to well over 200,000 students worldwide. Dr. McCabe has now retired with his wife D. J. to their home in New Jersey, where his life is centered on his family, including his children and their spouses--Melissa & Dave, Beth & Mike, and Tom & Susie, as well as six grand-children: Jessica, Emily, Mikey, Molly, Tommy, and Maggie. While he passes on his legacy of integrity to his grand-children, we continue to be driven and inspired by his excellent example.
