Tour Description:
Participants of this excursion will get to know the island from its west side. The program consists of a visit of the cities of Rethymno and Chania, both famous for their Venetian and Turkish influences and the Famous Arkadi monastery. During this tour and after driving along the north coast National Road of the island we visit the famous Monastery of Arkadi, where a Cretan Rebellion against the Turks finished with the burning of the monastery back in the 19th century. In Rethymno you will see the Great Gate, one of the old gates left over from the Venetian fortifications. The Loggia which was a social club where the lords and noblemen used to meet and relax. The Fortezza, built from the Venetians in 1574 a historical monument which offers you a magnificent view of the city.  Our next stop will be at Chania where you can walk at one of the most beautiful harbors in Europe. The old city is full of Venetians influences. You will enjoy walking around the narrow streets, which are full of bazaars.

Visit the War Museum in Chania
The War Museum of Chania is housed in the Italian Barracks, a work of the Italian architect Macuzo (1870), next to the Public Garden. It is a branch of the War Museum of Athens. The Historic Archives of Crete were founded in 1932. Its library comprises over 6500 books as well as very important documents from the Cretan rebellions of 1821, archives of the Cretan State as well as archives of civilians. It is one of the richest archive collections, second only to the General Archives of the State. The rare photographic material and the unique historical heirlooms depict the incomparable participation of the Cretan Macedonian fighters (1903 – 1922) in the Balkan Wars (1912-13), the Asia Minor Campaign (1919-1922), World Wars I and II and during the German occupation (1941-1945). It also has a small collection of folkloric and historical material.
