Montmartre

Though it was a sacred hill from the Roman temples period to the abbey of Montmartre and the political tone of Henri the IV, Montmartre preserved its cultural and artistic identity by offering a home to the greatest painting movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Today this real village remains particular with the narrow cobblestone streets, the Sacre Coeur basilica, the picturesque place du Tertre with the cafes and the caricaturists and portraitists, the mill of La Gallette, the old cabaret of Lapin Agile, the artists workshop, the popular restaurants and the famous Moulin Rouge keeping an alive memory of Toulouse Lautrec. But Montmartre is also known for having the only vineyards of Paris and it is enjoyable to close the program with a commented visit of the wines culture and to taste the production.

• Professional English speaking guide

Louis XIV's palace and vast formal gardens were laid out mostly between 1664 and 1715, the year of his death. Some of the greatest designers of the day were involved—among them the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun, and the gardener André Le Nôtre. What they gave him was the biggest and most sumptuous royal residence built, and it has been the model for many other royal fantasies ever since.
