  TECHNICAL TOURS

The Technical Tours will take place on Friday, August 27th, 2010. Buses will depart from the Congress Center at 8.00hrs and will return to the Congress Center in the end of the tours

General information
Technical tours No 1 to No 4 are reserved for full registered participants and students. Accompanying persons will be accepted if there will be any vacancies.

TOUR No 1 Creta Pharm - Pig Farm
Destination: Latzimas of Rethymno
Schedule: 08.00 – 16.30
Availability: 50 seats (1 buses)
Distance: 100 km (about 2 hours)
Description:

Visit to a pig farm named CRETA FARM (www.cretafarm.gr) with vertically organized production of meat and meat products. The capacity of this farm is 2.000 sows, with its own feed unit, slaughter house, meat processing plant and sausage making unit.

 

     
TOUR No 2 Sheep Farm
Destination: Asimi – Heraklion
Schedule: 08.00 – 16.30
Availability: 100 seats (2 buses)
Distance: 90 km (about 1,5 hours)
Description:

Visit to a family-run “Sfakia” breed dairy sheep farm. The farm raises dairy ewes and dairy goats of local native breed which are managed in semi-extensive conditions with a milking parlour. Milk is sold for cheese making. Subsequently, cheese (Graviera, Kefalotiri) making plant will be visited, which makes traditional cheese from sheep and goat milk.

 
 

     
TOUR No 3 Commercial Rabit Farm
Destination: Amari of Rethymno

Description:

Visit to a commercial rabbit farm of Pavlos Alexandrakis, of vertically organized production, with a capacity of 1.200 dos and modern rabbit slaughter house. Subsequently, the Experimental Sheep farm of the National Greek Research Foundation, where a total of 400 dairy sheep of Sfakia breed are raised, will be visited.
On the way to those farms the historic monastery of Arkadi will also be visited.

  

     
TOUR No 4 Horses Farm
Destination: Gonia of Rethymno

Distance: 115 km (about 2.5 hours)
Description:

Visit to the village of Gonia in the area of Rethymno, in which horses of the local breed “Messaras” are raised by a number of holders who have organized a cooperative named Saint George. The horse holders will present their horses and they will show a performance. The participants who want will have a chance to ride the horses.
The Messaras breed of horse is of small body size (height 1.5 – 1.7 m) with very fast walking (30 km/h) without galloping. This breed is under preservation.
